What happened
During a period of flight operations out of Davis-Monthan AFB, two Boeing B-50 aircraft were involved in a mid-air collision. The first aircraft was performing a training mission with 13 crew members on board. At the same time, a second Boeing B-50, which was conducting a refueling mission from the same base with 10 people on board, was also in the area.
While flying at a designated altitude of 9,000 feet, the two planes struck one another. Following the impact, both aircraft entered a descent and crashed into a desert region near Comobabi, situated approximately 50 miles west of Tucson. The accident resulted in significant loss of life across both crews. On the first aircraft, six crew members were killed and four others sustained injuries. On the second aircraft, seven crew members were killed and six others were injured.
