A heavy bomber crashed in a field southeast of Willows during a night training mission, resulting in 13 fatalities.

What happened

During a nighttime training flight originating from Biggs AAF in El Paso, Texas, a B-17 heavy bomber experienced a catastrophic loss of control. While the aircraft was cruising through light rain, it entered an uncontrolled dive.

As the aircraft descended, three members of the crew successfully exited the plane via parachute. The aircraft subsequently impacted a field situated approximately three miles southeast of Willows. Following the impact, search efforts located one crew member within the wreckage suffering from severe injuries. Along with the three individuals who bailed out, these four survivors were the only occupants to escape the crash.

The accident resulted in 13 fatalities among the total number of people on board.
