No fatalitiesKeflavik, IcelandTakeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced a loss of control during its takeoff roll at Keflavik Airport, resulting in the plane veering off the runway and sustaining heavy damage.

What happened

During the departure phase from Keflavik Airport, the flight crew attempted to clear snow from the wings by performing a high-speed taxi run, reaching speeds of 50 knots. Following this procedure, the takeoff roll commenced. Shortly after the aircraft type left the ground, it experienced a significant roll toward the left side.

In an attempt to maintain directional control, the crew applied full right aileron and rudder; however, these inputs were insufficient to counteract the rolling motion. Consequently, the engine on the right side was shut down. The aircraft subsequently returned to the ground and exited the left side of the runway. During the excursion, the right main landing gear struck soft earth, causing it to collapse. While there were zero fatalities and no injuries reported among the two crew members, the aircraft was a total loss.

Findings

  • The flight crew's preparation for departure was inadequate due to the failure to properly clear snow and other foreign materials from the wing surfaces.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by insufficient removal of snow and contaminants from the wings prior to takeoff.
