An aircraft flying from Iceland to the United States crashed into the ocean during an emergency ditching procedure, resulting in no survivors.

What happened

During a flight traveling from Iceland toward the United States, the crew encountered mechanical difficulties involving the engines. After notifying ground controllers of the ongoing engine issues, the captain determined that an emergency ditching was necessary. The aircraft went down in the ocean at a location approximately 385 km southwest of the Icelandic coastline.

There were 17 fatalities recorded following the impact with the water. The incident occurred while the aircraft was in the cruise phase of flight.

Findings

Official investigations concluded that the primary factor leading to the accident was engine problems encountered during the transatlantic crossing.

Probable cause

Mechanical failure involving the engines led to an emergency ditching attempt.
