23 fatalitiesConakry, GuineaLanding (descent or approach)

A four-engine aircraft crashed into a mountain near Conakry, resulting in the deaths of all 23 people on board.

What happened

A scheduled flight operating from Pyongyang Airport toward Conakry, Guinea, ended in a fatal accident during its final approach. The flight, which included stops in Kabul and Cairo, was carrying 17 passengers and a crew of six members. As the aircraft approached Conakry-Gbessia Airport, it encountered adverse weather conditions.

During the descent phase, the four-engine airplane struck a mountain within the Fouta-Djalon Mountain Range, situated approximately 30 km from its destination. The impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate. There were no survivors among the 23 fatalities recorded in the incident.

Findings

Investigations into the crash determined that the crew failed to maintain a safe altitude during the descent through poor weather. The primary factor was a controlled flight into terrain.

Probable cause

The accident resulted from the crew flying the aircraft into terrain while unaware of their insufficient altitude during a descent in bad weather.
