What happened
During a nighttime cruise over Prince Edward Island, the crew of the aircraft reported to air traffic control that both engines had failed. In response to this emergency, the flight crew decided to divert the aircraft back toward Stephenville-Ernest Harmon Airport.
As the plane approached Newfoundland, the aircraft became uncontrollable. The descent ended in a crash into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, specifically located near Codroy, approximately 112 km southwest of the intended destination at Stephenville. There were 13 fatalities among the occupants on board.
Findings
Investigation into the accident determined that the primary factor was a double engine failure occurring during the flight.
