7 fatalitiesSan Martín-Chapelco-Aviador Carlos Campos, ArgentinaTakeoff (climb)

An ambulance flight crashed during its initial climb from San Martín-Chapelco-Aviador Carlos Campos Airport, resulting in the loss of all seven people on board.

What happened

On the day of the accident, an aircraft operating as an ambulance service was performing a departure from runway 06 at San Martín-Chapelco-Aviador Carlos Campos Airport. During the climb phase, while the aircraft had reached an altitude of approximately 150 feet, it experienced a loss of altitude. The plane subsequently impacted the ground in the vicinity of the Río Quilquihué, located roughly 5 km east of the airport.

The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft and caused seven fatalities, with no survivors among the occupants. The flight was intended to transport passengers to Neuquén.

Findings

Investigation details indicate that the flight proceeded with an engine failure prior to departure. It was determined that the captain chose to initiate takeoff while only the right engine was functioning, leaving the aircraft without the use of its left engine.

Probable cause

The decision to depart the airport using only a single operational engine.
