Narrative

EVENT INVOLVES A COM PROBLEM BTWN ACFT; DENVER CENTER; AND GRAND JUNCTION RADIO. ACR X ON TAXI OUT REQUESTED AN IFR CLRNC TO DENVER STAPLETON FROM GRAND JUNCTION RADIO. RECEIPT OF IFR CLRNC WAS A HOLD ENTRY OVER THE FIELD WITH A DELAY. WE DID NOT ACCEPT THE IFR CLRNC AND GRAND JUNCTION RADIO SAID; 'I WILL TELL DEN CENTER YOU ARE DEPARTING VFR'. AFTER DEP ACR X CALLED DEN CENTER: DENVER CENTER; ACR X OFF OF MONTROSE VFR OUT OF 12000 CLBING. RESPONSE: ACR X CLRED AS FILED CLB AND MAINTAIN FL210. RESPONSE: DO YOU HAVE AN IFR SQUAWK FOR US. RESPONSE: SQUAWK XXXX. NEXT CALL BY CENTER: ACR X RADAR CONTACT OVER XXXX INTXN. 5 MINS LATER CENTER SAYS DID YOU TELL ME YOU WERE VFR BECAUSE YOU COULD HAVE BEEN IN CONFLICT WITH ACFT ON APCH AT GUNNISON; CO. HE ASSUMED WE WERE CLBING IN THE HOLD OVER MTJ IFR INSTEAD OF VFR. MY NEXT CALL A COUPLE MINS LATER: DEN CENTER; DID GRAND JUNCTION RADIO TELL YOU WE DEPARTED VFR AND DID NOT ACCEPT THE IFR CLRNC. ANSWER: YES; AFTER I ISSUED YOU A CLB CLRNC. IT SEEMS BETTER TIMELY COM BTWN RADIO AND CENTER REGARDING IFR CLRNCS WOULD HELP; AS WELL AS MORE INFO PASSED BTWN ACFT AND CTLR. A RED FLAG SHOULD HAVE GONE UP WHEN WE WERE ISSUED A CLB CLRNC WITHOUT AN IFR SQUAWK. 12 MINS OR MORE PASSED BEFORE GRAND JUNCTION RADIO ADVISED DENVER CENTER WE DID NOT ACCEPT THE IFR CLRNC. IN TODAY'S TIME OF ACFT SPDS THAT CAN BE CONVERTED INTO THE RADIUS OF A TCA.
