Synopsis
Air Carrier flight crew reported a fume event in the forward galley equipment. Flight crew completed a diversion and safe landing.
Narrative
At FL390 Lead FA [Flight Attendant] called up to say a burning; electrical smell was coming from forward galley overhead gasper. I had him check the ovens and coffee makers and also check for popped breakers. He said they were fine. I then had him feel the panels to see if any were hot and he said none were.We ran the Smoke Fire or Fumes checklist. It had no effect and the smell continued. I went back and confirmed it was not a burning food smell. It smelled like hot metal and oil and was not abating. The checklist directed us to divert to the nearest suitable if the fumes continued or the source could not be identified. We diverted to ZZZ.We continued the checklist while also [requesting priority handling] and notifying Dispatch. We used our oxygen masks as directed by the checklist and completed all the applicable checklists for the divert.Once we landed and cleared the runway I had [Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting support] confirm there was no visible smoke or fire and we then taxied to a gate.
Second reporter narrative
We were roughly halfway thru our flight from ZZZ2-ZZZ3; I was the PF [Pilot Flying] at FL390. The FA [Flight Attendant] called up front and told the Captain he thought he smelled fumes of some sort coming out of the forward galley gasper. The Captain went back and smelled for himself and came back up and agreed it didn't smell normal. We decided to run the smoke; fire;or fumes QRH procedure. We donned oxygen masks and ran the procedure up until step XY; Divert. The Captain [requested priority handling] with ATC and at this point we were about 80 miles west of ZZZ and set to overfly it; so we asked to divert there. ATC told us to fly direct to the field and descend initially to FL250. I checked the weather and set up for the approach while the Captain briefed the FA's and passengers. We texted the Dispatcher we were diverting to ZZZ and he very quickly responded with landing data. In the descent the Captain continued the procedure to possibly step YY; I don't recall. After briefing the approach to [Runway] XX we switched to Approach Control and were given vectors for the visual. The descent/approach/landing were very uneventful; I stayed as PF. We cleared the runway and the [support vehicles] looked us over and cleared us to the gate. After the flight I smelled the gasper but did not smell anything I would describe as abnormal.
