Air Carrier flight crew reported the aircraft was dispatched with ferry fuel. Upon arrival at BUR they were unable to land on Runway 8; the planned runway; due to a tailwind and a reported wet runway. During the missed approach and maneuvering for Runway 33 the crew received a EGPWS Terrain Warning. The crew's clearance was then changed to the RNAV Visual Runway 33.
Synopsis
Air Carrier flight crew reported the aircraft was dispatched with ferry fuel. Upon arrival at BUR they were unable to land on Runway 8; the planned runway; due to a tailwind and a reported wet runway. During the missed approach and maneuvering for Runway 33 the crew received a EGPWS Terrain Warning. The crew's clearance was then changed to the RNAV Visual Runway 33.
Narrative
Due to performance limitations for Runway 08 in BUR; ATC provided us vectors to Runway 33. With the field in sight; we conducted a visual approach to Runway 33. While visual to Runway 33; our EGWPS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System) alerted 'Caution Terrain'; we conducted a missed approach; and ATC vectored us back to Runway 33. The second approach continued until landing.Due to rain prior to arrival; wet runway performance became limited; having a quarterly tailwind also added to limited performance. We had over 12;000 lbs of ferry fuel added to our flight plan that also hindered our landing performance limitations. Pilot Input:Accurate field conditions report from tower; ATIS; prior landing traffic (PIREP). This would have been helpful; as Runway 33 was dry; and we could have landed on Runway 08 if it was listed as Dry. Also; adding ferry fuel to the amount needed to provide options to land on the 'preferred' runway i.e.; if we had 4000 lbs less ferry fuel; we could have landed on Runway 08.
Second reporter narrative
was the pilot flying. Due to being too heavy to land on the primary arrival runway of 08 because of the reported runway conditions of 5;5;5 and a tailwind; we were offered a visual approach to [Runway] 33. While maneuvering; we got a 'Caution Terrain' from the EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System). Went missed approach and landed 33 via the RNAV Visual 33 successfully. Runway was completely dry even though Runway 08 was reported to be 5;5;5.If we weren't ferrying 12;800 lbs of fuel; we would have been able to land on the primary runway with the reported tailwind and runway conditions of 5;5;5 with a straight in precision approach.Accurate runway condition reporting would be most helpful. Tower claimed they couldn't see runway to determine condition and no recent PIREPs were given. ATIS was reporting wet runways when in fact they were dry.Pilot Reasoning:Not being dispatched with so much ferry fuel into airfields with short runways. Up to date and accurate field condition reports are needed where performance issues are critical.
