Synopsis

ERJ-145 flight crew reported a BAGG SMOKE EICAS on landing and requested ARFF to check the aircraft.

Narrative

Immediately after touchdown in ZZZ we received the EICAS warning of BAGG SMOKE." We exited the runway; stopped the aircraft; and requested the Flight Attendant look into the baggage compartment for evidence of a fire. We did this first since we suspected an electrical issue primarily; since the EICAS had failed briefly on approach. As she was looking; we let ATC know; requested fire trucks; and requested priority handling. The Flight Attendant called us back and was unable to confirm nor deny the existence of a fire. We then ran the associated QRH checklist. This included us using the baggage compartment fire extinguishing equipment. The fire department arrived on scene. They went inside the baggage compartment and removed a bag that they said appeared to be smoking. After their inspection of the bag; they concluded it was not smoking. They suggested that propellant from the baggage fire suppression system gave the illusion that this bag was smoking. The bag was placed back onto the aircraft. We then taxied to the gate and unloaded our passengers. After the passengers exited the aircraft and Maintenance came aboard; we began to smell something burning. The aircraft was immediately shut down and turned over to Maintenance.Improvements should be made in the training of ramp personnel. They went into the baggage compartment and began to remove bags while it was full of Halon. Our checklist should indicate that we expressly prohibit ramp personnel from entering the baggage compartment after using the extinguisher instead of just notifying them that is has been used. The burning smell at the gate and brief EICAS failure on approach indicated to us that there was an electrical issue on the aircraft that caused this situation and not a fire of a passenger's baggage."

Second reporter narrative

After landing; [we] had a BAGG SMOKE" warning. After exiting the runway; [we] asked the FA (Flight Attendant) to check peep hole since we had an EICAS go out and come back during arrival and a suspected electric abnormality. She said she could not see anything. We proceeded with the QRH and fired the BAGG EXTG. We advised Ground and requested priority handling. The fire crew inspected the cargo hold and removed a bag believed to be smoking. Later; they returned that bag and said they believed it was just the agent from the extinguisher. During their inspection we advised ZZZ Operations of the situation and sent an ACARS to Dispatch.Once cleared by the fire crew; we taxied to the gate with an escort to the ramp. Called Operations again to inform them that the bottle was fired in the cargo and to advise the Ground handlers. We parked at the gate and deplaned normally via jet bridge. We called Dispatch to make report. Called Maintenance Control to write up the EICAS and the BAGG SMOKE.Checklist says to just advise ramp and not prohibit them from entering the cargo hold. Once Maintenance came on board; we; the crew and Maintenance; smelled something burning - the indications of an electrical fire. Plane was immediately shut down and handed over to Maintenance."
