Synopsis

C421 Pilot reported aircraft Nose Gear failure on landing.

Narrative

This was a training flight to build experience in the Cessna 421 and was my first time in this aircraft. The plan was for me to be picked up at the ZZZ1; fly down to ZZZ2; fly back to ZZZ1 and then the pilot would take the plane back to the base at ZZZ3. I was picked up at approximately XA10 and the flight to ZZZ2 was made under IFR and went routinely until we came in for a landing. On touchdown; it sounded like the nose wheel was skidding; we added more aft elevator and the skidding stop and the airplane taxied normally. We departed ZZZ2 and picked up our IFR in the air; canceling while on a descent into ZZZ1. Once we were near the airport; we canceled traffic advisories. When we lowered the gear; the mirror showed that the nose wheel was at a 90-degree angle; we promptly added power and gained altitude to troubleshoot. After climbing we decided to cycle the gear; on the next extension; the gear did not fully lock down. It only extended out at a 45-degree angle. We retracted the gear again and then followed the checklist for an emergency gear extension which yielded the same result. The PIC (Pilot in Command) and employee of the operation decided to call his boss for advice. A few calls went back and forth; we cycled the gear a few more times; ultimately ended up with the boss telling the PIC to put it down at an airport with as few people as possible. The PIC then starts throwing out landing ideas; I disagreed with his idea of a soft field runway immediately and said it was a bad idea and that we would slide right off the runway. I told him that we need to go to an airport with emergency services and suggested ZZZ4. He then thinks of the closed airport; ZZZ; and figures this is the best option. I again emphasize the need to go to an airport with services. He calls his boss again and tells him his idea of landing at ZZZ and the boss agrees with his decision. I emphasize the need to go to an airport with services a third time. At this point; we have been troubleshooting for about half an hour. I tell him one last time that I feel like making a landing at an airport with emergency services is our best option; and follow it with that he is PIC of this flight and we have to work together and if his decision is ZZZ; then I will agree to it. We make our way to ZZZ and we see cars on Runway XY-XZ; we plan to land on Runway XX; and make a low pass to warn the people on the other runway. The persons on XY-XZ clear off and we make our first pass on XX-XA; we attempted to land firmly on the mains to try and knock the nose gear down then would add power and go-around; after two unsuccessful attempts; we decided to prepare for a full landing. We briefed what we will do; opened the cabin door so we can exit quickly; and on short approach; I pulled the mixture to idle-cutoff; feathered the propellers and we held the nose off as long as possible. Once the nose went down; the gear did not hold; we slid on the nose to a complete stop. The PIC turned off the magnetos and the master switch. I pressed the fire extinguishers for the engines before exiting the cabin; unsure if they activated. I was displeased with the decision-making of the PIC and his boss. This being my first time in this airplane and not being a part of the company put me in an unusual position.
