PC-12 flight crew reported an ice protection system malfunction inflight.
Synopsis
PC-12 flight crew reported an ice protection system malfunction inflight.
Narrative
At approximately XA48Z; Enroute ZZZ1 at FL220; IMC and light to moderate Icing. OAT -21C. Configured for Pusher Ice Mode; Boots 1 Minute cycle. Received Deice Boots CAS (Crew Alerting System). Ran QRH; system reset IAW. CB (Circuit Breaker) did not trip. Monitor and continued toward ZZZ. Informed MX (Maintenance) Control and Dispatch via email on aircraft WiFi. MX acknowledged email. At approximately XB06Z; received second Deice Boots CAS. We were on 3 minute cycle. Ran QRH; system reset IAW. CB did not pop. Within about 1-2 minutes we received another Deice Boots CAS. CB did not trip; ran QRH; reset IAW. Contacted ZZZ Center; passed Deice system (boots) failures and requested immediate descent out of icing and vector towards ZZZ. ATC cleared us to FL210 and then to FL180; Hdg 240. They were clearing a few pieces of traffic for us. ATC subsequently cleared us to 10;000 ft. The Boots CAS continued with same results; it reset itself per QRH and CB did not pop. I was going to keep the boots going until they either cleared up or failed completely. We were still in light icing approaching 10;000. Temperature was -2 to 0C around 10;000. We requested 8;000 and ATC cleared us to 8;000. They also had us on 240 to 260 headings to help keep us out of the heavier precipitation to the NW. ATC asked what else we needed and gave us clearance to change headings as necessary. Aircraft WX radar was still up as it had been most of flight. We told ATC that we were in fact going to divert ZZZ. It was our best option as most of northeast was low IFR and rain and/or snow. ZZZ was light rain; no snow; and no ice below 4;000. Additionally; they have three very long runways in case we needed to actually perform a boot failure landing (I was thinking possible temperature inversion) on final. We requested ILS [Runway] XXL with Center. MX passed that ZZZ2 has Service Center and suggested that as possibility. ZZZ2 WX was low IFR and snowing. We were already tracking with going to ZZZ. We dismissed changing divert to ZZZ2; passed to MX that we were going ZZZ and would discuss once we got on ground at ZZZ. ZZZ Approach verified we wanted ILS XXL. We passed affirmative and they told us to expect it. In no slight to my FO (First Officer) (just got off 'Green' last cycle); we positively transferred controls and I was now Pilot Flying and FO was now Pilot Monitoring. Did not think it prudent to have him potentially have to perform a boot failure landing (if we picked up ice via temperature inversion); to a wet runway; in low IFR conditions; on the ILS. We set up for ILS XXL and ZZZ Approach passed they were turning airport around. We requested ILS XYR. They verified we wanted that runway; we passed affirmative; and we were told to expect it. We were still in mixed icing conditions at 8;000. Temperature still -1 to 0C. I briefed the approach for ILS XXR as well as the plan for executing Boot Failure landing if we had ice or setting Flaps 30; if no ice on aircraft. Approach cleared us to 6;000 and passed we would be vectored across final for spacing. We were subsequently cleared to 4;000; and vectored to join XYR localizer. We were in positive temperatures and would execute Flaps 30 landing. Approach cleared us for ILS XYR; and to contact the tower. The localizer was drifting while coupled. Disconnected autopilot; kept the flight director on; and flew the approach. Broke out at 1;200 feet. Landing; rollout; and taxi were nominal. Subsequently made it to FBO without further issues/incident. At no point did we receive priority as the icing was being managed and we still had the boots albeit intermittently. ZZZ Tower verified we did not need the equipment or any other services. We passed negative; good to go. ATC from ZZZ Center; ZZZ Approach; and ZZZ Tower were nothing short of 'Outstanding!'
