Synopsis
Pilot flying A-36 aircraft reported engine cylinder failure after takeoff. Pilot returned to departure airport and completed a precautionary landing.
Narrative
Flight was to pick up a passenger at another airport. Shortly after takeoff from Runway XX; I lifted gear and reduced engine to takeoff power. Then a loud BANG followed by a cylinder showing as 'dead' on my engine monitor. Engine was continuing to produce power. I advised Tower that I had lost a cylinder and would be landing on Runway XY. Tower: 'Do you need any assistance?' Me: 'No'. Since altitude and airspeed are your best friends; I flew a close-in pattern; maintaining altitude and power. Lowered gear and flaps; but was high over the runway threshold. Did not touch down until well down the runway and consequently applied hard braking; as I had determined that a go-around was not an option. Speed and braking resulted in the tire on the right main blowing. The bang was from a cylinder head fracturing. Not sure whether I should have lowered the flaps. Although doing so helped slow the plane; it also may have resulted in the plane's floating well down the runway before touching down.I should have also asked the tower to roll the equipment -- just in case.
