SIMULATED INST APCH TO CHINO. STUDENT WENT THROUGH LOC. TWR CTLR ADVISED TO BREAK OFF APCH GO TO APCH CTL FREQ.
Narrative
WE WERE FOLLOWING RADAR VECTORS TO FINAL COURSE FOR THE ILS RWY 26 APCH AT CHINO; CA. JUST BEFORE LOC INTERCEPTION; ONTARIO APCH TOLD US TO CONTACT CHINO TWR. WE COMPLIED. STUDENT HAD HSI SET TO PARADISE VOR; AND #2 NAV TO CHINO LOC. STUDENT WAS UNDER HOOD. STUDENT FAILED TO SET CHINO LOC IN NAV 1 HSI. AS A RESULT OF THIS ERROR; STUDENT MAKE A TURN IN WRONG DIRECTION; ATTEMPTING TO INTERCEPT A RADIAL FROM PARADISE VOR INSTEAD OF CHINO LOC. IN THE MEANTIME; WE HAD FLOWN THROUGH THE LOC COURSE. I WAS AWARE OF AND MONITORING THE SITUATION; AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE THE STUDENT RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM. I FINALLY TOOK THE CTLS AND TURNED ACFT BACK TO REINTERCEPT LOC. WE DID NOT STRAY MORE THAN HALF SCALE DEFLECTION FROM LOC COURSE. AS I BEGAN TURN BACK TO COURSE; CHINO TWR BECAME ALARMED AT OUR INITIAL INCORRECT INTERCEPT HDG; AND THAT WE HAD FLOWN THROUGH THE LOC COURSE CENTERLINE. THEY THEN GAVE US A HDG TO FLY; TOLD US TO BREAK OFF THE APCH; AND TO CONTACT ONTARIO APCH FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. BY THIS TIME I HAD ALREADY SET UP A REINTERCEPT COURSE; STILL WITHIN A HALF SCALE DEFLECTION OF COURSE NEEDLE. I CONTACTED ONTARIO APCH AND INFORMED THEM OF THAT FACT; AND THEY ASKED ME IF I WAS RECEIVING THE LOC SIGNAL. I AGAIN TOLD THEM THAT I WAS. APPARENTLY; THERE WAS SOME CLOSE PROX TFC THAT THEY WERE CONCERNED ABOUT. APCH VECTORED US AROUND AGAIN FOR THE ILS APCH; AND THE REST OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL.
