ZJX Controller reported being overloaded by traffic and weather.
Synopsis
ZJX Controller reported being overloaded by traffic and weather.
Narrative
I began the 2 hour session as an OJTI (On the Job Training Instructor) at Sector X around XA:00L. The line of weather was rolling in and pushing most aircraft to the east. I made a comment to my trainee 'See how busy sector Y is; that will be us very soon.' I was correct; and about 30 minutes later our complexity and volume began to climb very quickly. We needed a D side and Tracker; but there was no one available to help at that time. I pushed my trainee to the D side and took over the R side.It didn't take long for the sector to become unsafe and overloaded. I became reactionary as each clearance was just an attempt to keep my head above water. I was working aircraft destined for every airport in Florida that was south of the weather. Everything was hectic; and random plans were being made around me constantly. I was too busy to even know about some of them. For about an hour and a half; I was pushed to my absolute limits. My adrenaline was working in overdrive and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. At some point I said out loud something like; 'Alright; I'm starting to lose focus here!' My Tracker said; 'Sorry; I wish I could take over but I don't have the flick.' I was feeling completely drained; but I had to continue working. Finally someone came to relieve me around the 2 hour mark. I did not have the time; nor the brain power to properly brief him. I told him to watch and let me know when he had the flick. When he said he did; I unplugged; and what happened next was something that I had never experienced before. After standing up and putting down my headset; the room around me began to fade and I started feeling weak. [A Manager] tried to talk to me about break times and I waved him off and stumbled by him. I then went behind the consoles and put both hands against them. I proceeded to hyperventilate heavily for what felt like an eternity. At some point I finally regained control of my breathing and tried to walk away. After a few steps it started again and I stumbled behind the supervisors' desk and sat down. Again; I began to hyperventilate for awhile. When I was composed enough to walk away; I went outside and lied down on a picnic table. It took about 20 minutes for me to catch my breath and stop shaking. The working conditions at ZJX have become consistently unsafe for those in the sky; as well as the physical and mental health of the controllers. Overloaded sectors and sessions over 2; sometimes 3 hours have become common occurrences. We have recently had a heart attack; multiple panic attacks (including my own); people losing their medicals due to depression; and some that just outright quit the FAA because it has gotten so bad. Who knows how many other stress-induced physical and mental issues are happening that we don't even know about yet. This place is breaking people. We need help. I'll say it again; SOS!! ZJX needs help!! We need more controllers! How many more heart and panic attacks is it going to take for us to get the help we need?
