Synopsis

Air Carrier Ground Personnel reported a communication breakdown between maintenance stores personnel and supervisory personnel regarding shipping a Lithium Ion battery powered tool.

Narrative

We had a tool that was in our hazmat shipping area. When I opened the tool and saw the shipping document it had hazmat checked yes. I went to look up tool to make sure it was hazmat. Document actually says the part is not hazmat. When I looked at all the pieces in the box I discovered 2 lithium ion batteries. At that point I knew it was definitely a hazmat. The part did have a number so I looked that up and it was showing that it was not a hazmat. I sent an email showing pictures and explained that the part was hazmat and we needed instructions. They sent an email back explaining they needed to get with engineering and they would get back with us on Date.I come back to work on Date and part is still here. We get a call from engineering stated that we need to ship the part. Name explained that we could not ship part because it was hazmat and that he would need to speak with the lead. He did call Name told the guy he would need to speak to a supervisor. He called Name and Name explained to him that we had to wait till we got word from [name] with instructions. He told Name that that part had been shipped before with no problem. About 30 min go by and [name] comes and gets the part and takes it to Control Center.I go over and ask what is happening with the part. Name proceeds to tell me that tool room is coming to get the part to ship it. I was actually there when the tool room person showed up. I told her multiple times that the part is hazmat and needed to be shipped accordingly. She told me her supervisor said come get it and ship it. The part is not here as of this morning. I'm assuming they shipped the part knowing that it was hazmat.
