Synopsis
Air carrier flight crew reported the Captain's airspeed indicator remained at zero during the takeoff roll. The takeoff was rejected and the aircraft given to Maintenance.
Narrative
We were doing a ZZZ turn. Plane worked fine going to ZZZ. Then we were trying to leave ZZZ and had a problem. First Officer flying. On takeoff he set the power. My airspeed didn't move. Above 40 kts. his became active. Integrated Standby Instrument System appeared to indicate properly. At 50 kts. Captain airspeed still at the bottom and not moving. At 60 kts. the same. The trend arrow was climbing rapidly but the actual airspeed indication was still 0. Just before 80 kts. and the 80 kts. power set check I took control and announced reject. Plane came to a stop with max auto brakes. Did not use thrust reverse as the speed was declining rapidly and we had only used 1/4 or less of the runway in ZZZ. I could hear the Flight Attendant making some sort of Public Announcement so I taxied off; stopped and made an announcement to the passenger. I told them what had happened and that I would call Maintenance to see if there was a way to troubleshoot the affected system. There wasn't and we taxied back to the gate. Brake temp reached 300 degrees only after we arrived back at gate and we turned the fans on when receiving the brakes hot message. At the gate a mechanic was waiting. I went downstairs and he was using a ladder to inspect the Pitot tube. He found nothing. Then he ran a bite test in the cockpit and no faults were found. Maintenance said they were taking the plane out of service and needed to send a special machine from ZZZ1 to test the system. Upon hearing that I made another announcement explaining what had happened and that further tests were required and that it would be a few hours before that could be done. I told everyone to gather their belongings and exit the aircraft and that eventuality the Gate Agents would have some more information.
Second reporter narrative
First Officer was Pilot Flying. During the early portion of the takeoff roll; Captain called for and performed a rejected take off after observing his airspeed indication remained at zero. The rejection took place approaching 80 kts. A normal rejected take off was performed; ATC informed and a subsequent taxi back to the gate occurred. The First Officer and STBY instruments registered airspeed building up correctly; but the Captain Speed Tape never moved.
