Narrative
During aircraft origination preflight walk around; my First Officer noticed damage to the left wingtip strobe light assembly and surrounding area. The discrepancy was entered into the Aircraft Maintenance Logbook and maintenance notified. Aircraft removed from service. On a side note; there were switches left in the wrong position from being towed to the gate from remote overnight parking. The fuel cross feed was left OPEN; and center tank boost pumps were ON. The aircraft bleed air switches were left in the OFF position; as well.I cannot speculate on how the wing damage occurred. However; we need to ensure our tow crews follow their checklist. Hopefully the cause of the damage will be determined and steps will be taken to prevent it does not happen again. Regarding the incorrect switch positions; we need to ensure our crews are properly trained on configuring the aircraft for towing and re-configuring after parking. Is there any valid operational reason to open the cross feed or turn off bleeds for a tow? Finally; a well-done to my probationary first officer for his attention to detail during the walk around.
