Synopsis
Cirrus Vision SF50 pilot reported taking off with the AOA cover still on resulting in a return to the departure airport after the pilot began hearing strange noise during climbout.
Narrative
I had an appointment at ZZZ1 and arrived at ZZZ in plenty of time to make it. A subcontractor arrived at the same time I did and began a discussion about some maintenance items he was planning to do on the hangars. He talked for quite a while and I let myself get distracted because I was then running a little late for getting to my appointment early as I had planned. I did my pre-flight inspection but overlooked the AOA cover which I always leave on until just prior to takeoff in an effort to prevent damage to the AOA. I made my takeoff with the cover still in place. In the climb I noticed a strange noise coming from the nose area of the aircraft. Initially; I did not know what it was; so I returned to ZZZ and did a fly by the Tower. The Tower couldn't see anything wrong; and cleared me to land. During my approach; the recommended speed (bug speed) was higher than it should have been in the landing configuration. At that point; I realized that the AOA cover was still in place and that the noise I heard was the ribbon attached to the AOA cover flapping against the nose. In the future; upon arriving at the airplane; I will always immediately remove the AOA cover. I will also do one last walk around before getting into the airplane.
