Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported the windshield was struck by an object that was blown free due to the proceeding B787s jet blast during taxi. The crew continued to the gate and was met by maintenance.
Narrative
Arrived in ZZZ from ZZZ1. Our assigned gate was gate X. We were cleared to cross runway XYR after landing and make a right turn onto Taxiway 1 taxiing eastbound on Taxiway 1 and to make a left turn onto Taxiway 2 and then another left turn on Taxiway 3 to hold short of Taxiway 4 by Ground. The reason was that there was one aircraft in the alley (an A321) blocking our access to [the assigned gate] and also an 787 which was on Taxiway 4 between Taxiway 3 and Taxiway 1. As we made our turn onto Taxiway 3 moving towards Taxiway 4 I noticed the 787 and where it was and mentioned to my FO (First Officer) that I will stay back a bit because of potential jet blast coming from the 787. However we were told to move up so [another aircraft]; in the alley by Taxiway 2 can taxi out behind us. So we moved up and held short of taxiway C8 so [the other aircraft could] taxi out. We had the parking brake set and heard that the 787 was cleared to make a right turn from Taxiway 4 onto Taxiway 1 and taxi westbound. The 787 taxied against the flow of traffic moving westbound on Taxiway 1 while a lot of planes were taxiing eastbound on Taxiway 1 for departure on runway XYR. Either the 787 was going to a parking area or a westbound taxi for departure on XXL on the north side of the airport. I am not sure. Be it as it may; the 787 added a lot of thrust on both engines; maybe more than normal because the aircraft was stuck between Taxiways 1 and Taxiway 3 on Taxiway 4 and a really sharp right turn was required by the airplane to proceed westbound on Taxiway 1. I do not recall if there was a lot of vehicle traffic on the service road between Taxiway 1 and 3. Probably not because otherwise the next thing that happened would probably have involved a vehicle and not our aircraft.I am recalling that I saw a dark object; and I am not sure if it came off the ground or from the left engine of the 787; moving at a very high speed towards our airplane. I think it is important to state that it could have been FOD sucked into the left engine or picked up by the jet blast behind the engine or actually being a part from the left engine of the 787. Either way as the object travelled towards our airplane I didn't know if I should duck or not and just made my body turn away and turned my upper body to the right side to maybe negate the impact if it would go through our plane. I knew it would hit us but I was not sure exactly where either into the forward side window; or just below it. It all happened very fast. It travelled at the speed of a small bullet. I was able to see it but there was no way for me to get out of the way. The object struck in the lower third of the front window right in the middle about the level of my upper chest . It shattered the outside pane of the forward side window with a loud bang but did not penetrate the inside pane. It happened very very fast. We were still holding short with our parking brake set while waiting for the A320 to taxi out of the alleyway between [the two terminals]. I told my FO to contact Ground to tell the controller we have suffered extensive damage from the 787 throwing an object at our aircraft. We heard Ground Control contacting Airport Operations to search the area for more debris. After [the A320] taxied out we were cleared to [the gate]. My FO called for [maintenance] while we taxied in. Arriving at the gate Maintenance was already there to meet us.
