Synopsis
Air Carrier First Officer reported being notified by a Flight Attendant of smoke in the aft cabin during initial climb. Flight crew immediately requested priority handling for an air return where a safe landing was executed. Airport support personnel met and escorted flight to parking gate.
Narrative
While operating ZZZ-ZZZ1; we sustained a Smoke; Odor; Fume event shortly after take-off resulting in a return and landing at ZZZ. I was acting as the Pilot Flying on this flight. Pre-flight; gate departure and taxi out were all normal with no anomalies. Departing Runway XX; the take-off roll; rotation and initial climb out were uneventful. At approximately 600-800 ft. AGL; after gear retraction but prior to any flap retraction; the flight deck phone chimed from the cabin. The Pilot Monitoring answered the call to hear FA (Flight Attendant) number four reporting smoke in the aft cabin that was increasing and causing his eyes to water and throat to burn. The FA was notified that we would return to ZZZ and asked to report any changes to the situation. The CA (Captain); Pilot Monitoring; advised me of the situation and of our need to return to ZZZ. At that time [we requested priority handling] with the Tower Controller who acknowledged the [priority] and handed us off to Departure. During this phase of flight the Pilot Monitoring communicated with the cabin crew and the passengers of our need to return to ZZZ for a precautionary landing. I communicated with ATC and flew the aircraft on vectors around to Runway XY. The Pilot Monitoring executed the QRC checklist for Smoke Odor Fumes and continued into the QRH to the extent time allowed. The same was accomplished with the Overweight Landing procedure. I landed the aircraft on Runway XY in a Flaps 30 Autobrakes 3 configuration with a normal touchdown and rollout. We exited the runway where we were met by and immediately put in contact with ARFF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting) Personnel. They did a visual inspection along with temperature readings and reported no anomalies. The cabin crew reported the dissipation of smoke at that time as well. In coordination with ARFF they escorted us to [Spot] XX where they asked us to have passengers remain seated while they boarded the aircraft for an inspection. After doing so; they reported it was safe to deboard the aircraft which occurred normally. Maintenance took the aircraft from that point after AML entries were made by the CA. We received a new aircraft; reboarded and flew the original ZZZ-ZZZ1 trip with no abnormalities. In light of the unknown source of the smoke; emphasis was placed on returning to ZZZ in an expeditious but safe manner over completing all QRH items for [the] event. Nothing to suggest.
