Synopsis
Flight crew reported #1 Engine failure on take off. The flight crew performed an in flight shut down and feathered the #1 propeller. The flight crew made an air turn back and precautionary landing at departure airport.
Narrative
On Takeoff during gear retraction; I went to set Climb - 2 (35/2300). When I adjusted power; I noticed an erratic #1 MP Gauge. I set Climb 2 and looked at the #1 Engine to see it shaking with white smoke trailing from what looked like the exhaust stack on the top of the nacelle. I further reduced power to 30 inches but it continued smoking and shaking. Audible popping could be heard. I stated that I thought we should shut it down. FE concurred. I delineated for the Co-Pilot to continue flying and I would run the Engine Shutdown Checklist with the FE. With the Immediate Action Items Power/Gear/Flaps; we retracted the flaps and the Copilot accelerated to 150 kts. and joined downwind. The shutdown and feather was successful. I requested priority handling on the CTAF and provided Nature/Souls/Fuel/ Intention to return to Runway XX. Airport rescue and firefighting was dispatched and we could see them arriving from downwind. Checklist was completed and clean up items by FE. At this point we were in a position to turn base. I took the controls from the Copilot; called for Flaps 10 and he took the radios and checklists. We completed an engine inoperative landing on Runway XX. After clearing we shut down the #4 engine to taxi with symmetric engines. Completed parking and securing.
Second reporter narrative
On Takeoff after gear retraction; smoke and vibration was observed when setting climb power on Engine #1. Agreed with Captain that we should shut down the engine. Accomplished engine shutdown checklist and then continued with cleanup items. Pilots continued and performed an engine inoperative approach and landing parking and securing.
