Synopsis

Recreational / Hobbyist UAS pilot reported flying their UAS in controlled airspace. Pilot reported they subsequently obtained the TRUST certificate and now knows where to fly.

Narrative

I purchased a small drone for recreational purposes and began flying it only within my property boundaries; before reading the rules and regulations. Though I should have done the research when I purchased the drone; I only researched the regulations and registration requirements yesterday; at which time I realized I have been flying in Class D controlled airspace. The few times the drone has been flown have all been during the day; at low altitude; only within the boundaries of my property; and the drone was always visible to me. I have completed the TRUST training and received my certificate and a registration number has been acquired and applied to the drone. During the few times the drone was flown; no accidents; near misses; issues; problems; or events occurred. Corrective actions have been taken to prevent this situation from occurring again in the future. The drone will not be flown on my property again because it is located within Class D controlled airspace. A review of all possible flight areas (away from the property that I own) will be conducted (using B4UFLY or another service) prior to any flight to ensure all regulations are understood and complied with.
