Synopsis
A321 flight crew reported an Engine 2 Excessive Vibration ECAM message. This was shortly followed by an Engine 2 Over Temperature ECAM Message. The crew returned to departure airport and landed.
Narrative
Aircraft X experienced excessive vibration upon reaching acceleration altitude (1;000 feet AGL) while doing a TOGA takeoff. The thrust levers were reduced to MCT (Max Continuous Thrust) and crew received an Engine 2 Excessive Vibration ECAM Message. This was shortly followed by an Engine 2 Over Temperature ECAM Message. The pilot flying retarded the thrust levers to the climb setting seeing the over temperature message and engine parameters returned to normal. Aircraft was cleaned up and rest of takeoff was uneventful. During climb out crew coordinated with maintenance and dispatch via SATCOM. Maintenance confirmed indications noted during takeoff by crew and analyzed the aircraft history. Maintenance identified that this was the third time this NEO aircraft had experienced similar over temperature problems. The crew expressed our concerns about taking aircraft over water and the mountain with an engine that just had problems. Dispatch concurred and recommended crew return to ZZZ. Crew coordinated with approach to enter a holding pattern close to ZZZ and used this time to burn down some fuel while running all applicable checklists and coordinate with inflight; operations; and the customers on board. Upon completion of checklists and coordination; The Flight Crew returned to ZZZ. An uneventful ILS was flown to Runway XXL. This ended in an uneventful heavy weight landing approximately 20;000 pounds over the maximum landing weight. Sink rate at landing was minimum and majority of Runway was utilized resulting in minimal brake temperatures despite the heavyweight condition. Taxi back to Gate and shut down were both uneventful. Log book entries were made for Eng 2 Excessive Vibration and Overheat as well as an Overweight Landing.
