Synopsis
Air carrier Flight Attendants reported experiencing physiological symptoms due to cabin fumes during taxi. After unsuccessful attempts to refresh the cabin air the flight executed a ground gate return where all passengers and flight crew deplaned safely.
Narrative
After door closure; arming all doors and completion of our safety demo the A flight attendant stated her eyes were burning and began coughing from fume odor in the FWD cabin. I was in the D flight attendant position also FWD cabin and could smell a small amount but was not impacted as much as she was. The C flight attendant confirmed a strong odor in AFT cabin as well. The A flight attendant noted some guests were concerned with the odor. She then contacted the Captain regarding the issue. After several attempts to refresh cabin air circulation we returned to our gate. The flight deck notified guests on PA of our return & reason for returning to gate. The A flight attendant conducted the disarm door announcement and cross check then opened L1 door when CSA (Customer Service Agent) was present. With clear communication and a coordinated process between flight deck; flight attendants and CSA we deplaned all guests. During deplaning; all remaining doors were cracked open to help with better air flow & circulation. I opened the L2 door slightly (cracked open) to assist with air circulation during deplaning per instructions of the A flight attendant and complied with instructions to deplane all guests due to fume odor in cabin. After all guests were off the aircraft; all flight crew safely exited. If any unusual odor is present notify captain immediately and/or prior to boarding guests on plane so we can try and resolve before guests are on board.
