Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported the removal of a Hazmat container due to an odor emanating from the container prior to pushback. Captain further reported that he failed to submit a required logbook entry prior to departure.
Narrative
Right before we were getting ready to shut the main door the DG (Dangerous Goods) Specialist came up and dropped off the DG paperwork. As my First Officer was walking back with her to inspect the DG; the DG Specialist said she smelled an odor in the DG container at 2L. She asked us if we should remove it. I told her yes please remove it since there should be no odor of any kind. I proceeded to call our Dispatcher and inform him that we would be delayed to do the removal of the Hazmat can. I asked him if there was anything I needed to submit to the company because of this. He told me that it had been a while since he dealt with this type of issue and that he would check with the Duty Officer and get back to me.We proceeded with our preflight and once the container was removed we closed the door and proceeded to begin the flight. Shortly after closing the main door we received an ACARS message from Dispatch that stated [to reference a company procedure in our operations manual]. Since we were ready to push back I figured I would look at it once at cruise. It was at this point that I realized that an AML entry needed to be made. [Possible cause] not reviewing the FOM (Flight Operations Manual) prior to push back on specific actions that need to be completed with an odor; associated with DG. [I suggest] review the FOM prior to blocking out
