Narrative
APCHING SMO VOR WE CALLED THE LAX ARPT IN SIGHT AND WERE CLRED FOR THE STADIUM VISUAL RWY 24R. ON DOWNWIND (068 DEG RADIAL) THE CTLR ADVISED US THAT WE WERE #1 AND REQUESTED THAT WE KEEP OUR TURN TO FINAL TIGHT DUE TO ARRS ON 25L. WE TURNED FROM DOWNWIND TO BASE (D9.0 SMO) AT 4000 FT MSL AND AT 200 KTS. THE PNF BEGAN TO CHANNEL IN THE ILS FREQ FOR 24R WHEN THE PF ADVISED THAT THE 084 DEG R WAS NEEDED TO ESTABLISH WHEN TO START THE TURN FROM BASE TO FINAL. AFTER A GLANCE AT THE APCH PLATE; THE PNF SELECTED THE 084 DEG RADIAL ON HIS CDI AND THE PF FINISHED SELECTING THE ILS FREQ ON HIS NAV RADIO. WE WERE ON THE 084 DEG RADIAL WHEN IT WAS SELECTED AND LOOKING OUT THE R SIDE WINDOW; TOWARDS THE ARPT; WE SAW THAT THE ACFT WAS ALMOST ON AND 90 DEG TO THE FINAL APCH COURSE OF 24R. A TURN TOWARDS THE ARPT WAS IMMEDIATELY MADE; THE ACFT WAS LEVELED OFF AT 3500 FT MSL AND FLAPS EXTENDED TO HELP SLOW AND 'TIGHTEN' THE TURN. THE TURN TO FINAL TOOK US THROUGH THE FINAL FOR 24R AND OVER THE FINAL FOR 25L. THE ACFT WAS AGAIN ESTABLISHED ON THE FINAL APCH COURSE TO 24R AND LANDED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) THE DISTANCE REMAINING TO MAKE THE BASE TO FINAL TURN (APPROX 1.3 MI) AFTER XING THE 084 DEG RADIAL IS VERY SHORT IN TIME AND DISTANCE AND THIS FACT IS NOT CLRLY DEPICTED ON THE CHART. 2) THE PLATE (APCH CHART) WOULD BE EASIER TO VISUALIZE IF ROMAN (LOM) WERE SHOWN ON THE CHART. 3) THE NOTE (DOG LEG MIN OF 1 MI APPROX 45 DEG TURN TO FINAL) WAS NOT QUICKLY AND COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD.
