Narrative
UPON REACHING FL360 FOR FL370 HKG CTL CLRED US DIRECT TO KADIO (AN UNFAMILIAR INTXN NOT ON OUR FLT PLAN) AND TO CONTACT TAIPEI CTL. I PUT THE B AUTOPLT TO COMMAND (FROM OFF) AND NOTED THE THROTTLES RETARD AND ASSUMED WE HAD AN ALT CAPTURE. I DIVERTED MY ATTN TO LOOK FOR KADIO ON THE CHART. NEXT I KNEW WE WERE APCHING FL380 AT 1000 FPM. IN AN EFFORT TO LEVEL OFF; I PULLED PWR TOO RAPIDLY RESULTING IN A COMPRESSOR STALL ON #1 (RESULTANT OVERTEMP AND SHUTDOWN). THINGS HAPPENED PRETTY FAST BUT I SUSPECT THAT I HAD PUT THE AUTOPLT IN COMMAND AND THEN FAILED TO RECONNECT THE PMS; THUS THE REASON FOR NO ALT CAPTURE. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: ATC HONG KONG CLRED US FROM AN OFF AIRWAY POS TO KADLO (NOT ON OUR FLT PLAN) AT A CRITICAL TIME JUST PRIOR TO LEVEL OFF. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 193942: HE PULLED PWR BACK RATHER FAST AND #1 ENG COMPRESSOR STALLED AND OVERTEMPED. ENG WAS SHUT DOWN. CLRNC WAS REQUESTED TO DSND TO 350 AND AIR START WAS ACCOMPLISHED. MAIN PROBLEM WAS FAILURE OF THE AUTOPLT TO CAPTURE ALT ON PMS AS IT SHOULD HAVE. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE CAPTS (MY) FAILURE TO MONITOR VERT FLT PATH DUE TO DISTR CAUSED BY ATC CLRNC TO AN INTXN NOT ON FLT PLAN AND A RATHER INVOLVED COMPANY PROC FOR ENTERING DATA IN INS AND CHKING IT. AT THE SAME TIME I WAS ENTERING DATA ON FLT PLAN FORM AND PREPARING THE AIREP (POS RPT). BELIEVE ATC SHOULD MAKE AN EFFORT TO NOT CLR ACFT TO POINTS NOT ON THEIR FLT PLAN UNLESS REQUESTED; OR NECESSARY; AND IF SO; PREFERABLY NOT AT CRITICAL PHASES OF FLT.
