Synopsis

Air Carrier First Officer reported the taxi instructions are confusing in HNL when proceeding to Runway 8L. The FO states there is more than one way to get to 8L; during this construction period; using the current taxiway markings. The FO recommends some taxiways should be renamed to avoid confusion.

Narrative

We were cleared to taxi to Runway 8R; via [Taxiways] A and J and cleared to cross [Runway] 8L. J is partially closed; for construction between A and 8L. The Controller may have cleared us properly to cross 8L at A; but I am not certain. I queried them and we confirmed our routing and got it correct. The main issue is that there are two different ways to taxi via A and J to 8R if you look at the taxi diagram. Taxiway A runs parallel to the Runway 8L but makes a 90 degree right turn at the end of 8L; then goes perpendicular to the runway. While taxiing down A; to the end of the runway; you cross J before A; makes the 90-degree turn. Typically; when construction is not taking place; ATC will have you taxi via A and J (go down A until you get to J and cross 8L on J.) During this construction; you taxi via A and J (stay on A; past J and then take A on a 90 left hand turn to cross 8L on A where you then join up with J on the other side of 8L.) The main issue here is that there should not be two ways to take the same lettered taxiways to the same runway. This was further exacerbated by the fact that there is construction going on. Taxiway J is currently partially closed; and that is the way that most pilots who have flown into this airport will be expecting to taxi. With the large amount of international carriers; and a variety of accents on the radios; I predict this will result in somebody turning down the partially closed portion of Taxiway J; at night; in lower visibility; only to find the taxiway is closed. They will be stuck there; at best case; and run into construction equipment or a broken up runway at worst case.In my mind; the clear solution here is to rename Taxiway A at the point in time it makes a left 90 degree turn toward the runway; past J. If that was called A4 (most logical as it is A4 on one side already) or something totally different; this issue could be totally avoided.
