Synopsis
Air Carrier Captain reported First Officer windshield and heating element failed leading to multiple EICAS messages; resulting in transfer of control and divert.
Narrative
During cruise at FL360 the First Officer (FO) noticed his windshield appeared to have a large bug stain on it; but immediately we realized the window heating element was melting and that we had a problem with the windshield heat. We selected the right side window and right windshield heat off. Moments later the window cracked. We contacted ATC to start a descent and [requested priority handling]. The FO continued to fly while I continued to assess; communicate and manage the situation. I initially tried to find the Emergency Checklist for the broken window under the Ice and Rain section to no avail; realizing that it was in the procedure tab. We communicated with ATC that we wanted to divert to ZZZ and notified Dispatch of our situation. While getting vectored to ZZZ the Autopilot and Autothrottle disconnected and numerous flight control and EICAS messages appeared/cleared multiple times. We elected to transfer the source to my side and I became the pilot flying. As quickly as the flight control messages appeared they cleared after changing the source. We continued to work the Emergency Checklist for the cracked windshield and prepared for our approach into ZZZ. Once we were solid with our plan A and B; we briefed the situation to Inflight and notified the customers. Landing was uneventful. Crash Fire Rescue (CFR) was prepped for our arrival and we were asked if they wanted to follow us to the gate and we accepted the offer out of an abundance of caution.
