Synopsis
Air Carrier First Officer reported a fume event during cruise. After completing the appropriate procedures the Captain requested priority handling to a suitable airport where a safe landing was completed.
Narrative
Startup; taxi; takeoff and climb were uneventful. Shortly after reaching cruise atlitude at FL360 the Captain and I noticed an order which could be described as burning plastic or electrical in nature. The Captain called the flight attendants to ask if they had something in the oven (that may be burning) but they did not; and at the same time the aft flight attendants called about the same smell. We later found out the entire cabin could smell the odor almost simultaneously. I took the aircraft and ATC communications while the Captain accomplished the procedures to address the problem. After accomplishing the checklist the odor had gone away. We considered our options and due to the unknown source of the smell we elected to divert. The nearest suitable field was deemed to be ZZZZ1. The Captain continued coordination with the cabin crew and dispatch while I [advised] ATC and requested vectors to ZZZZ1. The descent and arrival to ZZZZ1 were unremarkable. Emergency vehicles were present and followed the aircraft to the hardstand since there were no abnormal indications in the aircraft requiring immediate assistance. Passengers deplaned uneventfully. No known cause; Maintenance is inspecting the aircraft for the source of the odor.Prevent any odor from filling the aircraft that is from an unknown source.
