ACR MLG INFLT ENG SHUTDOWN BECAUSE FILTER BYPASS LIGHT CAME ON AT CRUISE ALT.
Narrative
SCHEDULED FLT FROM SAV TO CLT FLYING MLG. CRUISING AT FL230; THE OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT FOR #1 ENG ILLUMINATED. WE WERE ON THE CHESTERFIELD 5 ARR; PAST FLORENCE VOR GOING DIRECT TO CHESTERFIELD WHEN LIGHT ILLUMINATED. FO WAS FLYING THE ACFT AT THIS TIME; AND I TOLD HIM TO GET HIS FLT MANUAL OUT AND WE WOULD DO THE ABNORMAL PROC. I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT AND WE ACCOMPLISHED THE ABNORMAL PROC. THE LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED SO PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN OF THE ENG WAS CALLED FOR AS DIRECTED BY THE CHKLIST. I DECLARED AN EMER WITH ATC AND ASKED FOR DIRECT CLT. ENG WAS SHUT DOWN USING THE CHKLIST. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE NOTIFIED AND PREPARED THE CABIN. I REQUESTED THE CFR EQUIP TO BE STANDING BY IN CLT AS A PRECAUTION AND PROCEEDED STRAIGHT IN TO RWY 36L. ALL PROCS WERE HANDLED PROFESSIONALLY AND EXPEDITIOUSLY BY FO AND THE FLT ATTENDANTS. THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL AND WE TAXIED TO THE GATE. ATC HANDLING WAS GOOD AND THE WHOLE SYS WORKED WELL. CAUSE OF THE OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME.
