Synopsis

Air Carrier flight crew reported severe turbulence in cruise flight.

Narrative

Associated Weather System and Jetstream movement over north [area]; at FL350; moderate turbulence rides were expected. We sat the Passengers and Flight Attendants in anticipation of the turbulence as well as slowed the aircraft to .76 Mach. We experienced momentary severe turbulence lasting approximately 60 seconds to include vertical shear with the aircraft unable to maintain altitude. Altitude deviations of both plus and minus 500 ft. were experienced. Airspeed deviations exceeding plus and minus 20 kts. occurred as well as seeing the VSI indicating more than 2000 fpm climb and descent. We disconnected the autopilot and gently applied corrective action careful to not over stress the aircraft. Positive control was maintained throughout and no limitations exceeded. Severe turbulence reported to ATC and Dispatch. Flight Attendants reported no injuries or any negative feedback as everyone was seated at the time. Flight continued normally to destination and landed without incident. Logbook entry made.
