GA SMA GOT LOST TRYING TO FLY AN IAP ILS APCH INTO MGY.
Narrative
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO GET INTO DAYTON GENERAL ARPT S; I; AS PIC; WAS RECEIVING VECTORS TO THE FINAL APCH COURSE FOR LOC RWY 20 APCH. I WAS CLRED UPON INTERCEPTION OF THE COURSE TO SHOOT THE APCH. HOWEVER; I NEVER RECEIVED SUCH AN INDICATION. I WAS CONTACTED BY DAYTON APCH AND GIVEN VECTORS BACK AROUND FOR A SECOND ATTEMPT. CLRED ONCE AGAIN I RECEIVED THE COURSE AND STARTED THE APCH. I QUICKLY LOST THE COURSE AND HAD FULL R DEFLECTION BUT CONTINUED TO DSND AND MADE A CORRECTION. THE MDA FOR THIS APCH IS 1380. I BROKE OUT OF THE CLOUDS AT 1800 FT MSL AND CONTINUED DOWN TO 1500 FT MSL. I NEVER GOT THE NEEDLE BACK FROM FULL DEFLECTION AND UPON GETTING A 'FROM' INDICATION; I FAILED TO EXECUTE A MISSED APCH. RATHER; BEING CLR OF THE CLOUDS; I DECIDED TO STAY DOWN AND LOOK FOR THE ARPT. I HAD SWITCHED TO 122.8 AND AFTER ABOUT 5 MINS OF UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCHING I WAS CONTACTED BY A PLANE WHO INSTRUCTED ME TO CONTACT DAYTON APCH. I DID SO AND WAS TOLD TO CLB BACK TO 3000 FT MSL. I DID SO AND WAS GIVEN VECTORS FOR VOR RWY 20 AND FLEW THE APCH SUCCESSFULLY; THOUGH I AM NOT SURE I MAY HAVE DSNDED BELOW MDA ON THE SECOND LOC APCH AND I AM CERTAIN I WAS NOT HOLDING MY ASSIGNED HDGS WELL. I WAS USING THE MAGNETIC COMPASS DUE TO AN ERRATIC DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE. THE PROBLEM AROSE DUE TO A LACK OF PROPER PLANNING FOR THE APCH AND A NUMBER OF DISTRS IN THE CABIN. I; HOWEVER; SHOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE DISTRACTED AS I DID AND MADE SOME VERY BAD DECISIONS IN CHOOSING MY ACTIONS.
