Synopsis

C-172 pilot reported a runway excursion while configuring for takeoff roll when aircraft directional control was lost. The aircraft exited the runway where control was regained with no injuries and only superficial scratches.

Narrative

Preflighting for the mission began Day 0 with weight and balance; performance review; weather review; Organization documentation (including risk management assessment); and flight release. Weather review included use of ForeFlight and the National Aviation Weather Center for analysis of current and forecasted weather. This included TAF; METAR; and map imagery. TAF was showing VFR conditions for the anticipated flight time. This mission required the completion of takeoff/landing work and the mission was planned around those parameters. Flight was planned to depart ZZZ and proceed east to ZZZ1 for pattern work - with the option of remaining in the pattern at ZZZ depending on the ATD and local traffic conditions.Weather was reviewed once again on the morning of Day 1 and was confirmed as VFR conditions acceptable for the planned mission parameters. The flight was deemed safe under the parameters of IMSAFE. The flight crew consisted only of the pilot and there were no passengers. Weather conditions were verified as acceptable a third time with ATIS after startup.During preflight; it was determined all three tires required servicing due to low pressure levels. Inflation of the tires delayed departure time; and the decision was made to complete the mission in the ZZZ pattern as opposed to at ZZZ1.Engine start was at approximately XA37 and the aircraft departed the ramp. Run-up was successfully completed at the XXR hold line on Taxiway X; and clearance was given to taxi to Runway X by ZZZ Tower (not ground). Following a brief hold for traffic; the aircraft departed Runway X without issue. The aircraft immediately entered a closed right traffic pattern after departure for Runway X to complete touch-and-goes. Clearance was given for touch and go. Approach and touchdown for the first touch-and-go was without issue. Shortly after touchdown while transitioning to takeoff configuration; directional control was lost and the aircraft began banking and yawing to the left. Power was pulled and pedals were utilized in an attempt to regain directional control. The aircraft exited the left side of the runway unto grass short of the Taxiway Y intersection. There is no recollection of the propeller ceasing to spin.Control was regained on the grass and the aircraft was brought to a stop. Clearance was sought and given to re-enter Runway XX/X from Tower and exit unto Taxiway Y and subsequently back to the ramp. Emergency services met the aircraft upon entering the taxiway; and escorted the aircraft back to the ramp. Emergency services met with the pilot for a walkaround after shutdown at approximately XB10. Emergency services provided the pilot with an incident report form at the ramp which was promptly completed. The pilot was not injured in the incident. Upon walkaround there was no visible damage to the aircraft other than light scratching typical of an aircraft propeller at one tip of the propeller blade and grass/soil marks at both tips. This was photographed. Despite the bank on the runway; the aircraft remained upright during the entirety of the incident. The flight dispatcher was immediately notified of the incident during the debrief after inspection.
