Flight crew reported a LE Slat ASYM EICAS message during approach and performed a go around to a landing.
Synopsis
Flight crew reported a LE Slat ASYM EICAS message during approach and performed a go around to a landing.
Narrative
We were on a downwind to on vectors after flying the ZZZZZ Arrival after ZZZZZ1. Abeam the runway I called for Flaps 1 at roughly 225 kts. We had a momentary flicker of the LE Slat ASYM EICAS message. It extinguished as quickly as it appeared. I reached over to the flap handle and made sure it was fully in the Flaps 1 detent and it was. As we turned base leg I asked for Flaps 5 as we were slowing down and once again the message flickered. Once the Glide Slope was alive I called for gear down; Flaps 20. As the flaps reached 20 the LE Slat ASYM Illuminated and didn't extinguish. I called for a go around and the PNF (Pilot not Flying) let the Tower know we were going around. We asked for vectors as we told them we needed to go thru the checklist for a flap issue. After completing the checklist and the landing performance numbers completed we then let them know we were [requesting priority handling] and needed to return and land. We were vectored for a visual approach to Runway XXR due to Runway XY/XZ being closed. We landed without incident. After landing we left the flaps extended for the taxi in to parking.
Second reporter narrative
2nd leg of the day for the crew and same aircraft; vectors to final ZZZ XXR at night. Weather was clear and winds were calm. Runway XY/XZ was closed. CA (Captain) was PF (Pilot Flying) and slowing the aircraft abeam the field. He called for Flaps 1 approximately 225 kts. We had a momentary flicker of the LE Slat ASYM Amber Caution Light. I assumed a transient switch. We continued on slowing on vectors and when Flaps 5 was selected; the light flickered again. We continued configuring while on long final on the ILS; and at Flaps 20; the light came on steady. We conducted a go-around with Tower instructions and asked Approach for an extended downwind to run through the QRH. With the checklist complete and aircraft configured; I requested priority handling with ATC and we were given vectors to final XXR. Landing was uneventful and we taxied to parking with the flaps extended for maintenance.
