Synopsis

SR20 student pilot reported fuel imbalance indications and returned to their departure airport.

Narrative

I was scheduled for a cross country solo. While sitting at Dispatch; I noticed NAME chalking the aircraft I was scheduled for. I did the pre-flight; run up; and takeoff. After running the cruise checklist the fuel selector was switched to the right tank. The Multi-Function Flight Display (MFD) indicated there was a fuel imbalance. The left fuel tank was indicating full and the right fuel tank indicated approximately 6 to 7 gallons were used. I switched tanks again to the indicated full tank. A yellow warning flashed on the PFD (fuel imbalance). I waited a few minutes to check SOPs. I made the decision the flight was unsafe and requested Center to go back to ZZZ Airport. During the descent back; there was a red warning flashing on the PFD (fuel imbalanced). After landing I informed Dispatch of the maintenance issue. Approximately XA:00; NAME and I were sitting together in the lobby area. I asked him did he have any troubles with the fuel during his flight. He stated in similar wording 'yeah the left tank kept indicating full but the right tank kept indicating used; but we flew with the issue and worked around it.' I asked him why didn't you squawk the plane he informed me I didn't think it was a big deal; if I knew that it was a problem then I probably should've squawked it.
