Narrative
I WAS A FO ON AN LGT X DEPARTING TAMPA VALLEY ARPT (HAYDEN; CO) FOR SAN JOSE; CA. YAMPA VALLEY ARPT IS UNCTLED WITH A COMMON TFC ADVISORY FREQ (CTAF) OF 123.0. BEFORE TKOF AN IFR CLRNC WAS RECEIVED FROM ZDC. THEY REQUESTED A CALL AIRBORNE. AFTER READING BACK THE CLRNC WE SWITCHED BACK TO CTAF (123.0) TO BROADCAST OUR DEP AND MONITOR OTHER ARPT TFC. AFTER TKOF WE MADE A R TURN DIRECT TO THE CHE VOR AND MAINTAINED 14000 FT (OUR ATC CLRNC). AT ABOUT THE CHE VOR AND 14000 FT WE CALLED ZDV. THEY SEEMED ANGRY AT US FOR NOT CALLING THEM SOONER. THAT IS THE POINT OF THIS RPT. WE FELT WE SHOULD STAY ON CTAF UNTIL SAFELY CLR OF THE ARPT INSTEAD OF CALLING THEM IMMEDIATELY AFTER LEAVING THE GND. A COMPLICATING FACTOR WAS ANOTHER ACFT HOLDING AT 15000 FT AT THE CHE VOR THAT COULDN'T BEGIN THE APCH UNTIL CENTER TALKED TO US. TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE THE PLTS AND CTLRS SHOULD HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING WITH EACH OTHER EXACTLY WHEN CONTACT WILL BE MADE AFTER TKOF. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 197987: ATC HAD CLRED OUR ACFT TO CLB TO AND MAINTAIN 14000; R TURN DIRECT TO THE CHE VOR; AND TO 'CALL AIRBORNE.'
