LANDED DOWNWIND ON A SLICK RWY AND SLID OFF THE END.
Narrative
I WAS HOLDING AT THE OM AT AMA DUE TO THE WX BEING BELOW MINS BECAUSE OF THE FOG. I HELD FOR APPROX 30-45 MINS. THE REASON I HELD FOR THIS LONG WAS THE FOG WAS CLRING FROM W TO E AND THE CITY OF AMARILLO WAS CLR VFR. TRADEWIND ARPT WAS ABOUT TO GO VFR AND I DECIDED TO LAND THERE WHEN IT DID TO SAVE ON FUEL SINCE THE FOG WAS CLRING VERY SLOW. EACH TIME I WENT AROUND IN THE HOLD I WAS LOOKING FOR TRADEWIND TO GO VFR. WHEN IT DID I CANCELLED IFR AND PROCEEDED VISUALLY TO THE ARPT. IT LOOKED LIKE THE FOG WAS GOING TO COME BACK OVER TRADEWIND SO I DECIDED TO LAND ON RWY 5 TO EXPEDITE MY LNDG. THIS APCH GAVE ME A SLIGHT QUARTERING TAILWIND. COMBINED WITH THE SHORT RWY AND THE FACT I WAS HIGH MADE FOR A BAD COMBINATION. HOWEVER; I HAVE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF LNDGS ON RWYS HALF THE LENGTH OF 5 IN A COMPARABLE ACFT; AND FELT I COULD COMPENSATE FOR IT. WHAT I DID NOT TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WAS THE RWY WAS VERY SLICK; AND WHEN I TOUCHED DOWN I HAVE VERY LITTLE BRAKING ACTION. BY THE TIME I REALIZED THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO STOP IN TIME I FELT I WAS GOING TOO SLOW TO MAKE A GAR. I ENDED UP RUNNING OFF THE END OF THE END OF THE RWY. LUCKILY IT WAS RELATIVELY SMOOTH AND THERE WAS NO DAMAGE SUSTAINED TO EITHER THE AIRPLANE OR THE RWY ENVIRONMENT. I TAXIED TO PARKING AND INSPECTED THE AIRPLANE AND SAW THERE WAS NO DAMAGE; WAITED FOR 10 OR 15 MINS AND TOOK OFF FOR AMA.
