Synopsis

LAND BELOW MINS OFF THE SIDE OF RWY IN GRASS.

Narrative

IN THE POS OF PIC ON THE EVENING OF JAN/SUN/92 UPON LNDG AT IXD; THE WX WAS RPTED W1 X 1/4 R-F. OTHER ARPTS IN THE KANSAS CITY AREA WERE ABOVE MINS. AFTER BRIEFING THE APCH FOR IXD AND THE ILS 3 FOR MKC; IN THE EVENT OF A MISSED AT IXD; WE PROCEEDED WITH THE ILS 35 IXD. THE APCH WAS TEXTBOOK; ALL CALLOUTS WERE MADE. THE APCH LIGHTS WERE IN SIGHT BEFORE DECISION ALT; SO CONTINUED THE APCH; RWY THRESHOLD LIGHTS WERE THEN IN VIEW. THE COPLT CALLED THRESHOLD AND RWY LIGHTS IN SIGHT. I ANNOUNCED THAT I AM VISUAL; ASKED FOR THE AUTOPLT AND YAW DAMP OFF AND LNDG LIGHTS ON. ALL WAS GOING WELL UNTIL THE FLARE. THE WIND GUSTED FROM THE L WHICH CAUSED A HARD DRIFT TO THE R. CORRECTED BUT IT DID NOT HELP. RATHER THAN MAKE AN ABRUPT MANEUVER AT THE LOW ALT; OR GAR; WHICH I FELT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FROM THAT POINT; I ELECTED TO LAND IN THE GRASS BESIDE THE PAVEMENT. MANEUVERED TO THE R TO CLR THE LIGHTS AND MADE A SOFT FIELD LNDG. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT; ARPT OR PAX. I FEEL I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICES ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE APCH AND LNDG.
