Synopsis

Two Cessna aircraft pilots reported a NMAC while in the traffic pattern at non-towered airport. The instructor; with trainee; and other pilot were practicing approaches to the same runway and did not hear any communication from each other. Both pilots reported taking evasive action.

Narrative

Instructing a student pilot on a cross country flight; we enter the traffic pattern following other traffic. All traffic was announcing positions and intentions. While on final approach and prepared to land; another Cessna passes very close to us; slightly to the right and about 50 feet above us. When we were aware of this traffic; we turned to the left; and climbed to make a go-around; announcing our intentions on the CTAF. We continued in the pattern and made a normal landing. The other aircraft was at the self service fuel station; so we parked near him and asked if he had seen us. He said that he had not seen us until he was on short final; and apologized for the close encounter. He said that he did not see our ADS-B out position on his devices; and we did not see him coming close behind us. As the only instructor; I discussed the traffic pattern; announcements; and right of way rules with the other parties. There was no damage to any aircraft; and we all departed that airport with no conflicts. It was a closer encounter than I was comfortable with in any case.

Second reporter narrative

Practicing GPS Runway XX; circle to land on Runway XY (active runway). Was on my 3rd GPS XX circle to land Runway XY. Announced break off and circle to land Runway XY; heard someone announce they were on final for Runway XY. I then announced downwind for Runway XY. No response. Approx 1 minute later; I saw a plane land Runway XY. At that time; I looked out for other planes and did not see any. Then I made my next call turning left base for Runway XY. No response. I proceeded to make my call for final Runway XY. No response. It was then that I saw the other plane in my peripheral. We both took evasive action. I landed safely and he went around and also landed safely. We discussed the event and what possibly led up to it.
