Synopsis
Air carrier First Officer reported a ground conflict with another aircraft during taxi into gate. There was inadequate wingtip clearance on the taxiway for two aircraft; and the flight crew stopped to allow the other aircraft to pass. Ramp Control seemed to be situationally unaware of the other traffic.
Narrative
Taxiing in on B taxiway and told to contact Ramp Control. Ramp Control instructions were to enter at [Taxiway] S3 and hold abeam the fire station. There was a Company aircraft outbound; headed for [Taxiway] S1 from the alley. We were not told of the outbound aircraft nor warned of inadequate wingtip clearance between [taxiways] S1 and S3. The Captain and I recognized that the two aircraft would not pass without conflict and the Captain appropriately stopped the aircraft on Taxiway B until the outbound aircraft passed. Ramp seemed confused and clueless of the traffic and told us of the outbound traffic only after clearing us into [Taxiway] S3 and after we had already stopped well clear of outbound traffic. Had we followed Ramp Control's instructions; the aircraft would have clipped wings or had to stop and be towed apart. Nothing in the page mentions whether or not there is adequate clearance; and it appears that clearly there is not. This is an accident waiting to happen; especially at night.Ramp needs training and situational awareness to not give opposite direction aircraft taxi instructions which could result in collision. Page needs to warn of inadequate clearance between opposite direction aircraft. It also causes confusion as to why there are three taxiways; S1; S2; [and] S3; painted on a taxiway that apparently only has room for one aircraft at a time. We felt a self-announce system; such as is in place at BNA; would have been safer than the nonchalant Ramp Control we received.Event summary - Ramp Control clearing aircraft to taxi simultaneously on [taxiways] S1 - S3 with inadequate wingtip clearance.
