Synopsis

Dispatcher reported one of their flights encountered severe turbulence on an approach and a temporary loss of control so they diverted to a nearby airport.

Narrative

At the time of diversion; there were no turbulence reports at or near ZZZ. However there were thunder storms that had recently passed east over the field. Conditions appeared to be improving; but the passage of the storm and the abrupt pressure change shifted and increased the winds at the moment they attempted the approach. The flight was cleared for approach and on my end; I observed them go missed; then declare a diversion to ZZZ1. I informed them that Ops would not be there and encouraged ZZZ2; due to Ops availability and good weather conditions. I also asked if they had experienced severe turbulence; so I could relay the information for other inbound crews. They confirmed that they had experienced severe turbulence and that they would divert to ZZZ. Upon arrival in ZZZ; they contacted me and we patched with Maintenance Control and the Chief Pilot. The turbulence was experienced for 8 to 10 minutes and began around 12;000 ft. The autopilot disengaged and there was temporary loss of control.
