Synopsis
Piper Archer pilot reported a ground conflict with another aircraft while taxiing around a row of hangars. An evasive braking maneuver was required to avoid a collision; and both aircraft continued their taxi after maneuvering around each other.
Narrative
I was doing my checkout in the flight club's Piper Archer. I'm a new member; and my instructor was very; very experienced. We had just started up and began to taxi. The club rents a hangar in the GA section of ZZZ; and we were emerging from the rows of hangars onto the main GA ramp.As we reached the edge of the ramp; a blind corner was created by the end of the row of hangars with an uncontrolled taxi route (with a yellow centerline; faded) just around the other side. From the left seat; I did not see the Cub behind the right 'A Pillar' of our aircraft. My instructor did; and verbalized 'STOP; STOP; STOP.' I immediately put the brakes on; not knowing why; but we came to a stop as the Cub preceded in front of us; right to left; and did a quick 'ground-loop' to give us space to depart in the direction they had just come from. We waved as we passed by; and they continued taxiing into the very row of hangars we had vacated. Ultimately my instructor and I debriefed the situation; and I expressed my appreciation for their lookout and quick; clear; instruction to stop. I believe the causal risk factors here to be; my unfamiliarity with the airfield and ramp area. The Cubs nose-high taxi attitude as a taildragger. The blind corner created by the hangar with an adjacent taxiway in an uncontrolled area of the field. We completed the flight without further incident; and I will be especially sure to instruct my students to keep a sharp eye in the ramp area at this particular field.
