Synopsis

C172 Pilot reported a partial loss of engine power on initial climb. Pilot requested and was provided priority handling to departure airport where a safe landing was executed.

Narrative

Experienced normal winds without gusts on take-off; the initial climb was normal; upon reaching about 1;700 ft. experienced engine roughness and about a 700RPM drop; upon realizing that I had lost engine power I immediately [requested priority handling] with ZZZ Departure and requested back inbound; still had some engine power so accepted Runway XX; normal downwind/base/final approach (except for lack of engine power throughout); did not experience any additional loss of engine power; landed and taxied off onto taxiway; upon stopping on taxiway proceeded to shut down the aircraft due to fire department closing in on my location to assist; upon confirming with firefighters that I was okay and that the aircraft did not pose an immediate danger I informed them that I could attempt a restart of the aircraft with the intent of taxiing it back to the flight school. After receiving clearance from ZZZ Operations to attempt the restart/taxi I did so. While taxing back to the flight school I noted that the engine sounded rough and I watched all of the gauges while taxing normally to see if there would be a further change in engine condition. Upon pulling into the flight school I was marshaled into an appropriate parking area and shut down the aircraft.
