Synopsis

Airbus 319 flight crew reported a #2 engine failure while descending to the destination airport.

Narrative

Passing through about 18000 feet; on the ZZZZZ Arrival; we got the Eng 2 Comp Vane ECAM. Engines were already at idle on descent. Before we could get to the procedure for the Comp Vane; we got Eng 2 Stall followed by Eng 2 Fail. Eng 2 was windmilling at approx 47% N2 causing the switching back and forth of the Gen 2. Screens kept flashing with these changes adding to distraction as we tried to diagnose. Started APU. Followed Eng 2 Fail ECAM. Engine was not restarting and opted to complete engine shutdown procedure as directed by ECAM. Additionally; EGT 2 was higher than expected (approx 570 [degrees]) although never exceeded limits. We opted to leave engine shut down.At first continued on the ZZZZZ profile but once we [requested priority handling] with ZZZ Approach; changed to vectors for Visual (ILS backup) Runway XX at ZZZ. First Officer coordinated descent and vectors while I briefed Flight Attendants and sent message to Dispatch. They were given 8 minutes; did not prepare for evacuation and I explained the engine was shut down. Gave a quick briefing to passengers on engine being shut down; told them to follow FA (Flight Attendant) instructions and that we would plan to go to gate.We briefed the new approach and continued vectors to Runway XX. Flaps full landing with auto brakes low. Uneventful touchdown and taxi. Continued to Gate XX. Debriefed Flight Attendants upon arrival. They did hear unusual noises; and the power switching (lights turning on and off) was alarming to them. Passengers complied with all of their instructions.

Second reporter narrative

Descending through 18;000 feet on the ZZZZZ arrival into ZZZ; we received an Eng 2 Compressor Vanes ECAM. This was shortly followed by an Eng 2 Stall ECAM; and an Eng 2 Fail ECAM. As we attempted to complete all ECAM actions; and the engine attempted to relight; we could hear; and see the effects of the Gen 2 constantly clicking on and off numerous times. We decided to complete the Inflight Engine Shutdown procedure on the ECAM; as well as start the APU to aid with the electrical issues. Once the right engine was shut down; [requested priority handling] and tasks were delegated to designate a Pilot Flying and the Captain communicated with the Flight Attendants and Dispatch. After a few vectors to verify we were all caught up and ready to proceed; we continued for the ILS [Runway] XX approach in ZZZ. We conducted an uneventful landing; followed by a normal taxi-in to the gate.
