Narrative
While functioning as a CFI with a high time rotorcraft transition pilot the Pilot Flying made 2 successful crosswind landings; on his third attempt the landing was successful but the pilot failed to properly maintain directional control due to the wind. The aircraft departed the paved surface briefly entering the grass adjacent to the runway. I took control of the aircraft and came to a stop and returned it to the runway. We taxied clear of the runway shut down did an inspection of the aircraft; found no damage or issues. I was lulled into a case of over confidence in the applicant and over confidence in his ability. In the future no matter what qualifications of the student i will maintain the highest sense of preparation to take aircraft control. We continued the training event and both debriefed the events. Much was learned and i have shared this with other CFIs as a chance to learn and prevent this from happening to others; I am a high time pilot; this has been a humbling experience.
