OUT OF 11000; CLRED 280 DEG HDG INTERCEPT RWY 31R LOC; CLRED STADIUM VISUAL APCH DSND 3000 FT (VIA SEVERAL STEPS; BUT WAS ABLE TO DSND ON GS 31R) INTERCEPTED LOC AND SAW STADIUM SLIGHTLY TO THE R OF LOC AND HEADED TOWARDS IT. APCH CAME BACK STATING 'JOIN THE LOC FOR DSCNT; CLRED STADIUM; ETC.' RETURNED TO LOC PWR OFF CLEAN 250 KT ASSIGNED DSCNT. WHEN INSTRUCTED TO REDUCE TO 210 KTS; AUTO THROTTLES WOULD NOT ALLOW SPD REDUCTION BELOW 230 KTS (CALCULATED CLEAN MIN MANEUVER SPD 216 KTS). AUTO THROTTLES OFF; INSTRUCTED TO SLOW TO 180 KTS; ATTN DIVERTED TO QUESTION OF AT ANGLE OF ATTACK CALCULATION VS EXPECTED ACFT WT; A LITTLE LATE TURNING TOWARD STADIUM; LEVELING 3000; SLATS SELECTED AT 200 KTS (185 KT MIN SLAT EXTENSION SPD) STALL WARNING ACTIVATES; MAX PWR; LEVEL WINGS (I'VE NOW FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE STADIUM) RETRACT SPD BRAKE; EXTEND FLAPS; ASSIST SITUATION. THE ACFT IS OK; BUT THE STADIUM IS AT OUR 5 O'CLOCK; WE'RE 3000 FT (HIGH) 180 KTS (FAST) CLOSING ACFT AHEAD (HE WENT THE LONG WAY). APCH CALLS AND SUGGESTS THAT WE BREAK OFF THE STADIUM APCH AND GO TO TWR; WHICH WE DID; AND LANDED WITH MAX FLAP CONFIGN AFTER A COUPLE OF S TURNS. THE ONLY LESSON I SEE IS ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.
