Synopsis
Air carrier flight crew reported a critical ground conflict. As the crew was taxiing; another air carrier taxiing on a parallel taxiway cut in front at an intersection requiring an abrupt stop. No warning or notice was given by ATC.
Narrative
Emergency stop while taxiing. We were given taxi instructions from tower to cross [runway] XL on taxiway 1 and to continue forward on taxiway 1 at which time we were to contact ramp. Aircraft Y was to our right. He was instructed to cross [runway] XL on taxiway 2 and to contact ground. I noticed while crossing that Aircraft Y had picked up his speed. I mentioned it to the Captain that it looked like he was racing us and wondered what his rush was. I contacted ramp and was instructed to continue on taxiway 1 to taxiway 3 to the gate. I am assuming on ground Aircraft Y had been instructed to taxi via taxiway 2 to taxiway 4 to taxiway 5 then to terminal. Aircraft Y turned on to taxiway 4 at a fast speed in front of us as we were about to cross taxiway 4 on taxiway 1. Captain saw this at last second and slammed on the brakes. I immediately contacted ground controller to alert them to the near miss. Ground instructed us to hold for Aircraft Y. Checked with flight attendants to find a passenger had been up but no one was hurt. Passengers on the right side of the aircraft witnessed Aircraft Y turn in front of us and we had a lot of questions and comments from these passengers at the gate.
Second reporter narrative
Ramp control issued taxi instructions to continue on taxiway 1 to taxiway 3 and with approval to Gate. The FO (First Officer) and I noticed Aircraft Y was surpassing us on the parallel taxiway 2 and; surprisingly; turned left on taxiway 6; requiring us to apply moderate braking at the intersection; allowing them to continue.
